Celebrating the Women in IBD Research This International Women’s Day

Dr Deanna Gibson

At Crohn’s and Colitis Canada, in partnership with Pfizer, we're proud to honour the exceptional female researchers who are driving progress in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) research through our annual Women In IBD Researcher Award competition.

Their dedication to improving the lives of those living with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis continues to push the boundaries of scientific discovery and inspire the next generation of researchers.

Meet Dr. Deanna Gibson

Dr. Deanna Gibson, the 2025 Women in IBD Research Award recipient, is a Professor at the University of British Columbia. Her work is reshaping our understanding of how the gut microbiome responds to environmental influences such as diet and how it drives immune function and metabolic health. Her research focuses on the development of genetically engineered microbial medicines for Crohn's, colitis, and other chronic diseases.

Her work exemplifies the vision and commitment to care this award celebrates.

As we mark International Women’s Day, we honour Dr. Gibson and all the recipients of this award. Their leadership drives progress towards new and improved treatment options, and strengthens the hope that one day, these discoveries will lead us closer to cures.
